  Master-Guro Dan Cepeda (1973)

"It seems like only yesterday that Sifu Rudy Serrano and I opened College Center Karate on College Ave. and El Cajon Blvd.  Being in the Martial Arts has been a gratifying and fulfilling experience for me.  I have a lasting friendship with all my students, past and present: without them, their loyalty and their dedication - Cepeda Brothers Martial Arts studio would not have been possible."

Master-Guro Joe Abueg (1987)
"I started martial arts in 1973 at a local YMCA.  I have studied Tang Soo Do Karate, Arnis (Filipino Knife and Stick Fighting), and Kenpo Karate.  I was fortunate to study the art of Arnis under the direction of Master Narrie Babao in 1979.  I later trained with Master Dan Cepeda in the art of Kenpo about four years later.  I have found that Arnis and Kenpo are complementary arts that utilize different angles of attack, circular motion, speed, flow, and focus.

Master-Guro Fred Cepeda (1980)                                       Started martial arts training in 1973 with Brian Adams for about six months.  He then followed his brother, Dan, to College Center Karate in 1974.  He received his black belt in 1980.  He also started Arnis De Mano training in the mid 1970's with Master Narrie Babao.  In 1981, he was promoted to the rank of Maestro along with his brother, Dan, and Guro Joe Abueg.

  Sifu-Guro Frank Marino (1977)
Started martial arts training in the summer of 1967 under Brian Adams, during which time he met Dan Cepeda.  Eventually Frank and Sifu Dan became instructors together and a lasting friendship was formed. Sifu Frank, a talented artist, has been painting windows, makings charts, and creating logos for tee shirts for Cepeda Brothers Martial Arts for 25 years.  Karate has been an important part of Sifu Frank's life.  Helping in the development of College Center Karate and Cepeda Brothers Martial Arts Studio has given him the opportunity to develop his skills in the martial arts.
In 1995, Sifu Frank was tested and promoted to Maestro and in 1996 was promoted to 6th degree Black Belt.  One of Sifu Frank's fondest memories in the martial arts is of watching Ricky Miyahara growing up in the studio.  Sifu Frank helped a young boy Ricky train in Kenpo…later Ricky, a young man, helped Sifu Frank train in Arnis

Sifu Richard Scott (1973)                                                          Commenced training in Martial Arts in May of 1968 under Brian Adams at Brian Adams school of Kenpo Karate in San Diego.  He earned his Black Belt along with Sifu Dan Cepeda in June of 1974.  Later that same year, Sifu Richard moved to Torrance, CA for two year period of training under Dan Inosanto at the Filipino Kali Academy.  Also during this period, Sifu Richard was schooled in the art of Boxing by Art Saxell, a former all Navy Champ.
Since that time Sifu Richard continued training in Kenpo Karate and other Martial Arts.

  Sifu Rudy Serrano (1977)
Sifu Rudy's martial arts training began in the late sixties under the instruction of Brian Adams.  It was there he met his future "partner" Dan Cepeda and the foundation was laid without mats, during their strenuous training and frequent sparring matches.
Shortly after Sifu Dan received his Black Belt, Sifu Rudy approached him with an offer of a partnership.  He figured with his successful business background and knowledge, coupled with Sifu Dan's Black Belt, they could open their own school.
College Center Karate opened for business in October of 1974.  Briefly following the opening, Sifu Rudy and Sifu Frank were tested and became the first black belts under Sifu Dan Cepeda.  Shortly after, Sifu Fred began his training and became Sifu Rudy's first Black Belt.  Over the next ten years the school continued to flourish and attained a highly respected reputation for its strong discipline and rigorous training.  In 1983, College Center Karate was sold.

  Sifu-Maestro Rudy Celaya (1981)
Started training in the Martial Arts in 1971 under Brian Adams.  It was during his six years under Brian that he met Dan Cepeda and Rudy Serrano.  When Sifu Dan and Sifu Rudy Serrano decided to open the College Center Karate Studio, Sifu Rudy Celaya joined them and has been with Guro Dan to this day.  Sifu Rudy is currently a 6th degree Black Belt and is also a Maestro in Arnis de Mano since 1993.

  Sifu-Maestro Ricky Miyahara (1986)
Sifu-Maestro Ricky started training with Cepeda Brothers Martial Arts studio since his parents made him join at the age of six because of discipline problems and hyperness.  Maestro Ricky's teachers in the studio often took on the role of parents, role models, brothers and sisters, and motivators.
Sifu-Maestro Rick Miyahara passed away July 15, 1998.  He will be remembered always . . .

Sifu-Maestro Steve Eckberg (1981)
First real exposure to martial arts was learning Okinawan karate at USD in 1976..  Steve was introduced to Dan Cepeda and College Center Karate through George Lim in the summer of 1977.  Rudy Serrano was Steve's primary instructor and inspiration through brown belt.  By the time he had begun training for his Black Belt, Sifu Dan had taken the lead in his training.  Countless other instructors and senior students offered guidance, inspiration and the always necessary constructive criticism (Frank, Fred, Rudy and Jo to name a few) Receiving his Black Belt in August of 1981 was a dream come true and one of the most significant event in his life.  During the next 8 years, after receiving his black belt, Steve experimented with his martial arts training.  He practiced regularly with several karate schools of various styles, joined the 5th Street Boxing Club and began to study Arnis under Maestro Joe.  Although never far from his heart, Steve discontinued his training in 1989.  Coming back to Cepeda Brothers last year, after a ten-year hiatus, was an emotional and joyful return.  Steve says; "My return to teaching and training is a gift from my children".

  Sifu Roger Ramos (1987)
Interest in martial arts began around the age of 10.  My friend, Dan Strometz, introduced me to Sifu Dan at College Center Karate, and I studied there long enough to earn a blue belt.  The workouts were much rougher then, probably because as a teen I was a dummy for many older brown and black belts.  Even so, the atmosphere was always family-like and the tight bonds of friendship that began there will last a lifetime.
After leaving for a 3-year tour in the army, I returned home in 1985 and looked up my mentor Sifu Dan.  I resumed training, working my way through the ranks, and finally reached my lifelong goal of becoming a Black Belt in August, 1987.  Since then, Sifu Dan's influence continues.  It is my greatest hope that I can bring to my students the same ethic and spirit  in training, within a caring, family-like atmosphere, like that of Sifu Dan's training that I experienced for so many years.

  Sifu Jeff Martin (1997)
Began his martial arts training in 1978 while attending the University of Redlands where he trained with Tim Tackett, an original student of Bruce Lee, in Jeet Kune Do.  When he returned to San Diego he continued his training at Tracy's Kenpo in El Cajon, attaining the rank of blue belt.  In 1989, while taking his oldest son Travis to karate, his interest in the martial arts was renewed.  During this time he realized the strength of his belief in the philosophy of full contact training and reality based martial arts.  After seeing "Big" Lee Malin win a local tournament in July of 1991 he decided to take a look at Cepeda Brothers.  He walked in during an advanced workout and instantly knew he had found the place he had been looking for.  In September of 1991 he began his training with Cepeda Brothers Martial Arts, where he received the rank of Black Belt in August of 1997.  He was promoted to 5th Degree/Sifu in 2001.

Sifu Dan Strametz (1980)
Sifu Dan Strametz always wanted to take martial arts, especially after seeing my first Bruce Lee movie, "Fist of Fury".  The first day I walked into College Center Karate, it felt like home.  All these Black Belts, and me the lone white belt.  I knew if I made it through the first night, this was home.  Four years later, and a whole lot smarter, I received my Black Belt.  Through the years I managed to advance to one tip, then two, and finally in 1990, I received my Third Degree.  In 2000, he was awarded the rank of Sifu.

Sifu Adrian Juarez (1986)
Senior Instructor Adrian Juarez joined Sifu Dan at College Center Karate when he was a student at Helix High School, where he played varsity baseball.  After graduation from Helix, Adrian served four years in the U.S. Army.  He resumed his training when Sifu Dan and Sifu Fred founded Cepeda Bros.  He received his Black Belt in August, 1986.  In 2000, he was awarded the rank of Sifu.  Both of Adrian's daughters, Athena and Analissa currently train at the studio.  Athena was promoted to Black Belt in 2001.

Sifu Tony Orlina (1989)
Sifu Tony Orlina joined Cepeda Bros. in January, 1985 at the age of 30.  After four years of consistent, uninterrupted training he was able to receive his Black Belt in August, 1989 together with his younger brother, Louie.  Tony loves to fish, but since his move to Ramona a new interest has taken most of his spare time.  He has traded in his fishing pole and boat for a horse and a saddle.  His friends and neighbors now refer to him as the "Kenpo Cowboy."  He now instructs at Sifu Jeff Martin's studio, Brand X, in Ramona.  He was promoted to the rank of Sifu in 2003.

  Sifu-Maestro Louie Orlina (1989)
Sifu-Maestro Louie Orlina works as a letter carrier with the US Postal Service.  He started training at Cepeda Brothers in 1986.  He achieved Black Belt ranking in 1989.  He also studied Arnis De Mano and achieved his Maestro rank in 2001.  He was promoted to the rank of Sifu in 2003.  Cepeda Brothers and Martial Arts will always be a part of his life.

  Sifu  Marcia Cruz (1992)
Sifu Marcia Cruz moved to San Diego in 1985 and one of her first goals was to find a good martial arts school.  "I was truly fortunate to find Cepeda Brothers the following year and will always feel an abiding love for the people and experiences of the last 13 years.  Receiving my Black Belt in 1992 at the age of 32 is the unrivaled highlight of my life.  It has also been an honor to fulfill one of Sifu Dan's dreams…that of opening a sister martial arts school, Arena Martial Arts. It is a privilege to be a part of this amazing family."  She was promoted as the first female Sifu in the school's history.
